The Philippines is now number 45 in the latest FIBA Rankings. From number 53, thePhilippines moved up to number 45. That's quite a great leap forward and the primary reason for that is the great performance of Coach Rajko Toroman's boys in the recently concluded FIBA Asia Championship 2011 wherein the Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas finished 4th.

MANILA, Philippines — Serbian coach Rajko Toroman is not trying to make an alibi but he said the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team could have performed better and finished higher than fourth place had they trained and prepared as a complete team months before the FIBA-Asia Championship.

"We need longer preparation. We didn’t have enough days to prepare the team,” Toroman said Thursday in a phone interview when asked for his overall assessment of the Nationals’ campaign in the FIBA-Asia.

Rajko Toroman

MANILA, Philippines—Coach Rajko Toroman may failed to pull off a miracle in the Asian championship but he has earned more respect from one of his peers after elevating Philippine basketball to new heights.

From 53rd in the world, the Philippine five moved eight notches up the Fiba men’s rankings to 45th after Smart Gilas Pilipinas finished fourth in the 26th Fiba Asia Championship held recently in Wuhan, China.

It was the third biggest jump from among the five zones—Europe, Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania—of the sport’s world governing body after Macedonia (who rose to 33rd from 47th) and Britain (now ranked 43rd from 56th).
