Reyes to SMART-Gilas, Black to Talk ‘N Text discussed

The teams backed by businessman/sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan may be in for a shakeup.

Talks have been ongoing in the past few days regarding a possible reshuffling of personnel that may include two of the most prominent figures in basketball – multi-titled coaches Chot Reyes and Norman Black.

Reyes, who led the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters to two championships and a runner-up finish in the PBA last season, and Black who led the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles to four consecutive UAAP championships, confirmed that discussions were being held.

Reyes has been rumored to be next-in-line to take over the head coaching position for the second incarnation of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, which would open up the Talk ‘N Text job for Black, who currently serves as a consultant with the pro squad.

"It’s been discussed, but as far as I know, no decision has been made yet,” Reyes wrote to InterAKTV in a text message.

Reyes and his Tropang Texters fell one win short of completing the PBA’s first grand slam in 15 years when they lost to the Petron Blaze Boosters in the seventh game of the season-ending Governors’ Cup finals.

Black, meanwhile, steered the Blue Eagles to 16 wins in 17 games in the previous UAAP tournament, where they completed a rare four-peat. He also owns 10 championships as a head coach in the PBA and was part of the TNT grand slam run last season.

Like Reyes, Black was aware of the ongoing discussions.

"The talks have been going on for the past few days now, but there’s no change yet in my status as coach of Ateneo,” added Black.

Reyes is an obvious candidate for the SMART-Gilas post, due to his involvement with the team.

After the PBA season, Reyes joined the coaching staff of Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman in the FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China. They led SMART-Gilas to a fourth-place finish in the tournament, matching the highest achievement of any Philippine team since an all-amateur squad placed a similar finish in 1987.

"That’s one of the important things we’ve discussed during the SBP meeting last week, how continuity will work. Continuity means not only in coaching, but the flow of players as well,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios.

But Barrios said nothing is definite at this point.

"There’s nothing cast in stone from the time that Mr. MVP and (Toroman) met until the time the coach comes back here. The coach is set to return on Nov. 15, but nothing is certain yet whether he will remain as coach or be a team consultant,” said Barrios.

"In reality, the SBP is looking at a pool of coaches and that includes Toroman and the other two PBA coaches – Reyes and (Meralco Bolts head coach Ryan) Gregorio – as candidates. The SBP is currently at its planning stage from now up to the end of the year and from there, we should have already identified the coaches and the players who will compose SMART-Gilas 2,” added the former PBA commissioner.
