MANILA, Philippines — Serbian coach Rajko Toroman will return next month to discuss the formation of the new Smart-Gilas team. Short of confirming that he will stay on, Toroman said PBA’s offer to loan its players is a good idea and weighs a lot in his decision to return. Toroman met with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan Thursday night. Interviewed during the PBA Press Corps Awards Night Friday, Pangilinan said he offered Toroman the post of consultant. "Pinag-iisipan niya. I told him to take his time,” said Pangilinan who was named Executive of the Year by the PBA press corps. Toroman made known his intention to return. "I’ll come back to discuss the proposal (for Gilas 2),” said Toroman, who flies to Serbia Wednesday with wife Tanya. "I said to MVP, I want to continue the work. There are some issues that I’m asking from him.” Toroman said PBA’s decision to lend as many as 16 players to the national pool is welcome news. "I think the idea is great to make ‘Gilas 2’, combined with the idea of PBA lending its players,” said Toroman. "With the core of Smart-Gilas now in the PBA like JV Casio, Marcio Lassiter, I think we can make a great team.” "Also, I think that (amateurs) Keifer Ravena, Rey-Rey Parks and Greg Slaughter can also be candidates for FIBA-Asia,” added Toroman. Toroman said the meeting with MVP proved fruitful. "It was a good meeting. We exchanged thoughts, and I expressed my feelings… what we can do, what we can improve. I said to MVP, we could be better prepared. Everything is open now. This time, I need a rest. We all need rest. When I come back everything will be much clear,” said Toroman. | |
